Sierra Leone
The country of Sierra Leone is bordered by Guinea, Liberia and on the west by the Atlantic Ocean. Its landscape includes a flat coastal area with fringing mangrove swamps, wooded hills and forested high mountains. The climate is generally hot and humid. Even though the country has a rich supply of natural resources (diamond mining, etc.), it is one of the least-developed countries. According to World Bank data, more than 52 percent of Sierra Leoneans live below the national poverty line ($1.90 per day). This might be an outcome of long-term civil war, lack of education and the Ebola crisis.
School Sisters of Notre Dame (SSND) are in two communities, Makeni and Bumbuna, serving in educational and health sectors.
