Makeni Community
SSND Presence in Community and Mission
Makeni, Sierra Leone — The Makeni Community is located in the northern part of Sierra Leone and belongs to the Diocese of Makeni. The sisters’ presence is felt both at the parish level and at the institutions where they minister.
Besides being Eucharistic Ministers and lectors, SSNDs in Makeni also serve in various capacities. They teach music to the children of the parish who are members of the Shalom choir, which was founded by Sister Vera Owo, SSND - a previous member of the community, and serve in the country.
One sisters serves as a lab technician at the Holy Spirit Hospital in Makeni. She is a member of the development committee in the parish and also a member of the parish pastoral council. Sister has been working in the hospital since 2015. She just graduated from the University of Makeni, the only catholic university in the country with a degree in public health.
Another sister who served as the Chaplain and as a research assistant at the University of Makeni just graduated from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi, Ghana with a Master's degree in Occupational and Environmental Health and Safety. Currently she serves as a lecturer at the same university.
Our sisters in Makeni have ministered as Spiritual Director for the Catholic Women Association (CWA) in the Our Lady of Fatima Cathedral Parish, Makeni and as the Notary for the Marriage Tribunal in the diocese.
Sisters continue to witness to unity by their very being as they live in community and mission. They enflesh the spirit of Mother Theresa of Jesus Gerhardinger in their day to day life.
We remain open to promoting vocations and are welcoming to all who knock at our door. We continue to stand on the shoulders of our ancestors in upholding the values of our constitution, You Are Sent, while respecting the dignity of the human person.
