Mary Queen of Peace Catholic School

Mary Queen of Peace Catholic School in Cape Coast, Ghana

Cape Coast, Ghana — Mary Queen of Peace is a Catholic private basic school of the Archdiocese of Cape Coast. It was started in 1991 in an effort by the then Archbishop to make quality Catholic Education available to the people of Cape Coast. It was entrusted to the School Sisters of Notre Dame to manage and they eagerly accepted it, bringing into play the belief that “Education means the enabling of persons to reach the fullness of their potential as individuals created in God’s image and assisting them to direct their gifts toward building the earth.” The motto of the school is Shine Forever!

The school started with Kindergarten, Primary and Junior High and at its 20th Anniversary the Nursery classes and Crèche were added. The school follows the curriculum set out by the Ghana Education Service and prepares all students for the National Education Certificate Exams. An important part of the school’s life is the weekly school Mass on Fridays which is prepared by a different class each week – including the Kindergarten classes! Outreach to needy individuals and groups is an annual event during Lent. Students also participate in Shalom activities as well as various civic and world remembrance days and events.

Mary Queen of Peace Catholic School in Cape Coast, Ghana - Peace Pole Dedication

Originally intended to be a Parish school, MQPCS has an enrollment from all of Cape Coast as well as villages in its environs. Parents come from all sectors of society: farmers, fishermen, drivers, maintenance workers, laborers, as well as educationists, medical personnel, civil servants, professionals and business persons of all sorts. It is awesome to watch their children come together, learning and building relationships that are lasting, and then to hear stories of the graduates as they move through higher education to adult life and have a significant and positive impact on the community.

A significant mark of MQPCS has been the ability to take in students of wide-ranging abilities, including ‘learning disabilities’, and assist them to be their best selves and proceed to complete basic education and the national exams. The school has developed a small ‘remedial center’ which helps those with difficulties and provides additional resources in the area of English language and reading for gifted students.

God has blessed Mary Queen of Peace Catholic School these 29 years and we trust that the future will bring even greater graces and achievements. Shine Forever!
